I'm obviously biased because I'm part of Forem which powers this community, among others, but to speak to Facebook itself: We are strongly convicted that it is not a platform to entrust longterm growth to. You get the simplicity of the network effect, but you just don't want the rug pulled out from under you again and again, and to have mod tooling limited to Facebook's lowest common denominator tooling.

I also don't think Facebook is very safe from a branding alignment. If you say "join our community on Facebook" there's a segment of the population which will cringe, or worse.

IMO communities on the web need to be built on strong foundations with consistent UX for everyone, but it's really a shame when that means being sucked into Facebook's orbit.

Fully agree! Thanks for all of this great insight, Ben. You put into text everything that's been on my mind.

I'm looking forward to moving our community off of Facebook before EOY. Loving the experience here so far. Where can I book a time to chat with someone about Forem?

Hello Ben,
Can you recommend some platforms to transfer a community from Facebook groups to?
