Or, if you've ever handled hiring for your team, what's your go-to question to see if a candidate really 'gets' community?

Not really a question but how they talked about community and customers when they're explaining the role and answering my questions. I like asking them what their fav community moment or story is.

I also appreciate it when hiring managers mention the mental / emotional toll of community work and emphasize that they're there to support and advocate for time off, space, etc.

On the flip side, as a hiring manager, I like asking people how they personally define community and community management. It's super basic but ensures that we're speaking the same language (or flags that we're not using the same vocabulary).

Asking for examples about how they deal with tough situations is also really helpful. I like asking how they're thinking through these situations to get a sense of what they're valuing and prioritizing.
