Where do you engage community members when building social features in-platform, but features are not yet live ?

hi all ! i head up our community work at The Landing (https://thelanding.app), a very early stage social platform that gives users a digital space for visual curation via moodboards (think Canva x Pinterest). we will be building and releasing social features in the platform over the next few months - for example, in two weeks, all users will be able to create profiles and view a live feed of user designs. this will be an incredible first opportunity for users to gain inspiration from + start to follow one another, but it's going to be a bit until we have features built into the platform for users to engage with one another (think comments, direct messages, etc.).

in the meantime, we want to be engaging directly with our users ASAP, and creating channels where they can engage with our team and with each other. we currently use Slack for a group of ~60 of our early supporters + super users, but only a very small group (<5) users use this outlet consistently.

would love to hear from anyone who has thought through anything similar: where + how would you convene and engage your users, in the meantime before communication features are built into our platform? (e.g. Discord, Circle, closed Instagram page, etc.)

would just note that most of our most recent users have come to us via TikTok and skew largely GenZ, so anything we set up has to be something that will resonate with this crew :)

thanks in advance for your WISDOM ! <3

This website is a Forem which is an option you may want to consider. It's an open source platform which your team could plan to build into the app in the long run (or at least keep it around for announcing features, etc.), but early on it's helpful in that it is a form factor which doesn't require consistent engagement the way.

As you get going, it's a form factor which you can use to publish elsewhere on the web and draw folks in on the discussion.

I'm part of the team and we're just getting ready with the next phase in our release. Let me know if you're interested in staying informed.

Hi Liz!

I've been keeping my eye on The Landing -- you all are doing some amazing stuff! Here at Contra, we have a Slack Channel where we keep our users engaged in the meantime. We too, are building new features that will be released in the next few months. I think our Slack Community works so well, because it is a part of our onboarding flow and there is a big value prop to join (finding remote work and other freelancers to connect with). But, I totally get how Gen Zers aren't in love with Slack -- Discord or Telegram have popped up on my radar recently too!

Also, thanks for sharing this Ben! I hadn't heard of this resource before ๐Ÿ˜

Samantha! So good to hear from you - think this is really helpful and would love to hear more about how you integrated the Slack signup into your on boarding flow. Am a huge fan of Contra - would love to catch up and talk shop and hear whatโ€™s worked / not worked for you all so far, given weโ€™re in such similar stages! Lmk if youโ€™re ever down to chat !

Samantha! This is so funny, I actually recognize you from TikTok. ๐Ÿ˜‚ (I'm the you of the Lance TikTok.) Anyway - we're just starting our own community and I see what you guys are doing is great. How can I join your slack channel? The link I see on your site isn't working... (contra-community.slack.com/join/sh...)
